Nairobi is unique in that it is the only
city in the world with a national park,
Nairobi National Park. The Park borders
the city with coverage of 44sq.mile with
an attraction of various wild games that
includes lions, elephants, wildebeests,
giraffes and rhino. There is an animal
orphanage that takes care of the maimed
animals.
The Kenya cultural centre, Bomas of
Kenya is opposite the Park. It offers
traditional dancing program, and has
village replicas on its ground, representing
most of Kenya's ethnic groups. The headquarters
of the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi
Museum is located about 6km from the
city centre. The Museum keeps the original
fossils of the early man and has attractive
exhibitions of natural and cultural
heritage of Kenya. It is an important
starting point for naturalists especially
bird watchers. Other Museums are located
in the major towns across the country.
With her good climate, Kenya boosts
of a number of interesting parks distributed
all over the country. They include Maasai
Mara (recently, 2006 declared the seventh
wonder of the world), Amboseli, Lake
Nakuru, Tsavo (East and West), Samburu
Game Reserve, Shaba Game Reserve, Lake
Baringo, Aberdares National Park and
Meru National Park as well as the Great
Rift Valley. The Valley stretches from
the far end in northern Kenya down to
Serengeti National Park that lies along
the Kenya Tanzania border.
The Rift Valley is of international
fame for its natural scenes such as
Lakes Turkana, Baringo, Naivasha, Bogoria
and Elmentaita, beautiful Escarpment
overlooking Lake Naivasha and the dormant
volcanic mount Longonot. Rift valley
is also reputed as the home of early
man as most of the prehistoric sites
are located in it. This includes Koobi
Fora east of Lake Turkana, Kariandusi
and Ollogesaillie in Kenya and Olduvai
Gorge and Laoteli in Tanzania.
